Illustrator Tutorial for Designing Checkerboard Ball

Create a rectangle and duplicate it several times. Then change the colours randomly. Next choose all and duplicate again and rotate.

Group the rectangles and move to position scaling. Change the transparency mode to Darken.

Make a circle and cut at the top and bottom. Delete one-half. Change the stroke.

Drop the checkerboard pattern into Symbols.

To the half circle, apply 3D Revolve with a custom rotation.

To brighten up the circle, make changes to the lighting settings.

Choose Map Art. The ball will look like this:

Select the symbol we created and choose the surface (1 of 2). Adjust the points to cover the whole area of the ball.

If you want to duplicate the ball, make a copy and move it. To change its look, click on 3D Revolve in the Appearance palette and make the changes. This is the final look of the ball.
